Country Gent

The country gent dresses for the field and for the pub afterwards: wool and check, cut generously, with a waistcoat to keep the chill out. Cousin Jack's country gent clothing for men runs from waistcoats in check and herringbone wool to high-waisted trousers, plus fours, long socks, collarless shirts and a Harris Tweed cap. Our wool waistcoats and trousers are cut from cloth by Abraham Moon, the West Yorkshire mill in Guiseley founded in 1837. We design every style in Elland, West Yorkshire, and make it in our own UK factory or at a carefully selected factory in Europe.

How do you dress like a country gent?

Country gent attire starts with the waistcoat, because it does most of the work. Then choose your trousers, add a shirt and finish with a cap. Here is a country gent outfit, piece by piece:

• The waistcoat: our green check and blue and grey check waistcoats are 100% wool and understated country wear. For a smarter line, the Revere Waistcoat in brown herringbone or navy herringbone adds a revere collar, four pockets and a buttonhole for a pocket watch chain.
• The trousers: fishtail back trousers in navy or brown herringbone for a high-waisted, wide-legged line, or our plus fours in a blue and grey or green check for the full sporting look.
• The socks: our long socks in bracken or charcoal are a merino wool blend with a cushioned sole, knee-high and chosen to go with the plus fours.
• The shirt: Tommy's collarless shirt in mid blue, or in blue ticking, is a hardwearing, practical shirt with a patch pocket on the left and a back yoke.
• The cap: our Harris Tweed newsboy cap in an ash brown or moss green check is fully lined, with an eight-panel crown. Harris Tweed is protected by an Act of Parliament and has to be handwoven in the Outer Hebrides.

A country gent suit

If you are putting together a country gent suit, the waistcoat and trousers are the two pieces to start with, and our suit separates come in matching colours. Add a tweed jacket of your own and you have a three-piece in true country gent style.

Fabrics, care and sizes

The check and herringbone pieces are 100% wool, so dry cleaning is recommended, while the shirts are 100% cotton and can be machine washed at 30 degrees. The socks are a merino wool blend: wash them inside out at 30 degrees on a wool wash and dry them flat.
